Selected Works

Geo Creatures

Tools: Multi-Media

Description: About two years before Pokemon GO's announcement, I had an idea for a mobile game that uses the smartphone's GPS to enable players to catch virtual creatures based on the player's real-world location.

The pre-production phase for Geo Creatures was a collaboration between myself and an artist I had discovered and hired online named Tomycase, with me working as Creative Director.

Together we created a myriad of pre-production material, including ~100 creature and character designs, all of which I took part in as visual director. Around this same time, I promoted the project via Geo Creatures-brand social media accounts, and promotional materials used for conventions and giveaways.

Due to Pokemon GO's announcement, the project was ultimately rendered obsolete.

Weird Wiki

Tools: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop

Description: A branding and identity case study consisting of two separate album cover branding concepts for a fictional podcast about strange history, called Weird Wiki.

The first cover inspired by the works of Saul Bass is designed with a young audience in mind. The globe represents world history, while a yellow tinted glow added to the type makes it feel aged and distorted.

The second album cover is for a more mature audience (ages 18+). As the podcast discusses historical oddities through a modern, educational lens, I chose to create a photo manipulation inspired by turn-of-the-century freak shows and encase it with a modern, minimalist design.

Save The Date

Tools: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop

Description: An event poster created as part of my internship with the New York Public Interest Research Group, which strives to get college students engaged in politics.

Inspired by wrestling posters, the fight for affordable education feels like a dynamic, engaging battle.

Krokodili Kongreso

Tools: Adobe Photoshop

Description: A commissioned illustration series for a to-be-published trivia board game currently in pre-production. The game translates as "Crocodile Congress" and is written entirely in the language Esperanto.

Krokodili, or "to crocodile", is a common Esperanto cultural phrase meaning "to speak one's native language in a setting where one should be speaking in Esperanto". Because of the phrase's usage in Esperanto culture, I decided to make a friendly crocodile the mascot of the game.

Since Esperanto is a language that was created to connect people all over the globe, I depict the crocodile taking various methods of global transportation.

About Me

Hi. My name is Gage Smith, and I'm a graphic designer and illustrator inspired by the past, geared for the future, and living in the present in Central New York.

In Spring of 2018, I graduated from the State University of New York at Cortland with a BA in New Media Design.

I specialize in branding, identity, and design for both print and web with over six years of active graphic design experience.

As an artist, my passion lies in creating stories that matter. Last winter, I studied abroad in Indonesia, learning about the impact art has on social movements, speaking directly with internationally acclaimed artists who work globally and locally to bring about positive social change.

I dream of one day illustrating for comics, publishing a graphic novel, or even working in children's animation.
